FirstChoice Family Care offers on-site x-ray and ultrasound to help our providers diagnose and treat your condition.
Dr. Tompkins holds admitting privileges to both Livingston Regional Hospital and Cookeville Regional Medical Center. His relationships with the Emergency Medicine and Hospitalist groups at both hospitals allow him to work closely with your provider to determine the most appropriate facility to meet your inpatient medical needs, and in most cases arrange for you to be directly admitted to the hospital if indicated. Most of the time, this will allow you to skip a long wait in the ER. Dr. Shaffer has close ties with Vanderbilt University Medical Center's Monroe Carell Jr. Children's Hospital and works closely with all providers to ensure your child is cared for properly in the hospital if the need arises.
Skilled Nursing Facility Care
Dr. Tompkins serves as Medical Director for Pickett County Care and Rehabilitation, in Byrdstown. He sees patients who are admitted there either for short term rehabilitation or long term residents. By providing care to this population, FirstChoice Family Care is able to deliver comprehensive primary care to our patients no matter where they are located in the healthcare system.
Meet Our Providers
James Tompkins, MD
Dr. Tompkins is a lifelong resident of Byrdstown. He graduated from Pickett County High School, completed a Bachelor of Science degree in Chemistry from Tennessee Technological University, and received his Doctor of Medicine from the James H. Quillen College of Medicine in Johnson City, Tennessee. He then completed a residency in Family Medicine at the University of Tennessee Medical Center in Knoxville, Tennessee. He is a Diplomate of the American Board of Family Physicians (ABFM), a Fellow of the American Academy of Family Physicians, and additionally holds the Designation of Focused Practice in Hospital Medicine from the ABFM. Dr. Tompkins has practiced Primary Care in the Upper Cumberland area since 2010, as well as Hospital Medicine and Emergency Medicine. He currently serves as Medical Director for Pickett County Emergency Medical Services and Pickett Care and Rehabilitation. Additionally, he serves as Pickett County Medical Examiner and volunteers as Team Physician for Pickett County K-8 and High School.
Jori Shaffer, MD
Dr. Shaffer grew up in Byrdstown. She graduated from Pickett County High School in 1990, completed a Bachelor of Science degree in Chemistry from Tennessee Technological University in 1994, and received her Doctor of Medicine Degree from the University of Tennessee Memphis in 1998. She then completed a combined Internal Medicine and Pediatrics residency program at Vanderbilt University in Nashville, TN in 2002. She is a Diplomate of the American Board of Pediatrics. She has practiced medicine in Byrdstown, caring for patients from all over the Upper Cumberland and Southern Kentucky region, for nearly 18 years.
Dr. Jori (as her patients affectionately call her) resides with her husband Lance and their sons Quinn, Zeke and Zeb in Livingston, TN. They live on a small farm and raise alpacas. She and her husband are active in their local church, especially in the worship ministry. They all love music and doing family activities and adventures together.
Tamara Copeland, PA
Tamara is a native of Livingston, Tennessee. She is a 2003 graduate of Tennessee Technological University in Cookeville, Tennessee, holding a B.S in Biology. She is a certified EMT-IV, and received an additional B.S. in Health Science Biology from Butler University in Indianapolis, Indiana, graduating in 2006. She completed her M.S. in Physician Assistant Studies, also at Butler University, in 2008. She has extensive work experience in the Upper Cumberland area, both in Primary Care and Emergency Medicine. She resides in Livingston with her husband and 4 children, and enjoys spending time with her family on Dale Hollow Lake and traveling.
Mary Leah Webb, BSN, MSN, FNP-C
Family Nurse Practitioner
Mary Leah is a native of Livingston, Tennessee. She holds a Bachelor of Science in Nursing from Tennessee Technological University in Cookeville, Tennessee, graduating in 2003. Following graduation, she worked as an RN at Livingston Regional Hospital for 12 years. She completed her Family Nurse Practitioner training in 2015, also at Tennessee Technological University, and has been practicing primary care in Byrdstown since then. She resides in Overton County, Tennessee with her husband Barry and children Kolin, Keaton, and Kenley. She enjoys spending time with family and friends and relaxing on Dale Hollow Lake.
